Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) is a common problem affecting between 2 - 13% of adults. Approximately 90% of these infections are due to 3 common fungal pathogens with very long names, namely Trichophyton rubum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Epidermophyton floccosum. Treatment of a fungal nail infection is not recommended without an accurate diagnosis.
