Musculoskeletal (MSK) Podiatry Treatment
Musculoskeletal or MSK Podiatry is a specialist area of Podiatry which focuses on the structure and function of a person’s feet and lower limbs.
A musculoskeletal assessment can identify the underlying causes of lower limb pain (i.e. foot, ankle and knee pain). Below is a list of some of the more common conditions that we would assess, diagnose and treat in a MSK podiatry appointment;
- Heel pain (e.g. plantar fasciitis, heel spur, Achilles tendinopathy)
- Ankle pain (e.g. tarsal tunnel syndrome, tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction, adult acquired flatfeet)
- Forefoot pain (e.g. metatarsalgia, Morton's neuroma, capsulitis)
- Big toe pain (e.g. hallux rigidus/limitus (osteoarthritis), hallux valgus/bunions)
Treatment options are varied and will often consist of one or more of the following;
- Stretching/strengthening exercise programmes
- Education/advice on returning to sport/work/exercise
- Footwear advice/alterations
- Padding & Strapping
- Splints
- Foot orthoses (insoles)
- Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy
- Cortisone injection therapy
- Liasing with and referring to other health professionals, for example, Physiotherapists, Orthopaedic Consultants, Podiatric Surgeons, Orthotists and Sports Massage Therapists.
